Posted on September 29th, 2009 by Sandy in News

A growing importance is the general guide to the subject of Due Diligence and Corporate Governance. This handbook illustrates how Due Diligence is used to assess the risk of any transaction, customer or investor for all and any businesses regardless of size or location.

There are three main reason for the rise in the uses of due diligence: First, companies are now doing transactions worldwide and the need of utmost importance to be vigilant is increasingly when it concerns the individuals and companies they are dealing with. Second, investors, the media and the consumers are putting pressure on companies to avoid unethical transactions, transactions that harm the environment or corrupting socially responsible organizations. Third and last, internal controls must address the growing regulatory requirements that was introduced in response to the increasing corporate scandals and the terrorist threat.

Due diligence allows companies to profile the companies and their individuals with which they want to do business with before any commitment is made. It’s a tool that provides an effective safeguard against criminal activity, breaches of legislation and damage to reputation.

The handbook, with its diverse coverage and focus on the practical uses of due diligence, combine illustrations and explanations of the best practice by listing case studies, showing diagrams and giving a checklist. It is the essential guide for all companies involved in global transactions and risk management . A broad introductory guide to due diligence provides ways to examine due diligence in the context of corporate governance and risk management. It’s straightforward, practical and comprehensive. The use of case studies illustrates, the checklists to monitor risk management and provide insights into comparative corporate governance to business users is the framework that will build a safe environment not only for your employees and your company, but for all of the United States of America.

Delhi’s Geeta Kapur

Posted on September 28th, 2009 by Sandy in Culture, Travel

In India, it’s possible to feel the pulse of the universe, and in Delhi, it beats out loud.  Delhi is one of the most magnificent cities in the world, with one of its largest and most populated urban areas.  There is everything here, and sometimes everything at once.  It is an exhilarating experience to just sit and people watch for an afternoon, where the whole human drama plays itself out almost daily.  It is also a fantastic place to take a vacation, offering a view into other worlds, and there is something here to captivate everyone.  For the traveler who wants to see the city from the lap of luxury, five star hotels in Delhi are the way to go.

Offering the finest amenities available, and meeting or exceeding the highest standards in the industry, our hotels offer a spectacular level of hospitality and service.  Your stay here will delight you as much as the city will enchant you.  Waking up and falling asleep in splendidly furnished room, you’ll be able to sample a meal of exceptional taste, prepared by world class chefs, before venturing out to meet what Delhi has to offer you.  Delhi has everything, and guests of all ages will find some absolutely splendid treasures here, and usually things that cannon be bought.  The art is particularly compelling, and at this moment in India’s history, there are some traces of activity that suggest some new radical movements are in the making.  Whether the medium is painting or installation art, Delhi has spectacular artists, and extremely astute critics, such as Geeta Kapur.

She writes and curates in all forms, but is more focused on video and video installation in metropolitan India.  She has taught and lectured widely, from the University of Delhi to Cambridge and back again, and is one of the most respected contemporary critics in the field of art theory.  Her writings about the works you might see here are certainly worth looking into, and it’s a very auspicious sign to see Geeta Kapur’s name on the list of curators at an exhibition.  She has juried on such prestigious panels as the Venice and Dakar Biennales.  Her writing is very dense, dancing around ideas of film in a rather ethereal way, and suddenly the writing gets solid, and lands in a poetic space that is lovely and challenging, much like the art she curates.

Replace Car Tires Every Six Years

Posted on September 28th, 2009 by Sandy in Automotive

Tire industries in Asia and in Europe have been warning consumers about the dangers of driving on car tires that are older than six years of age.  Each year many people become seriously injured in crashes due to fact that the tread on their tires has worn out and the rubber of the tires themselves has become dried out.  They may have looked safe to the naked eye upon inspection, and may have even passed the penny test on the tread, but a safety consultant to the United State government states that this visual inspection is often just not enough to ensure the safety of the tires.

She is also calling on the manufacturers in the United States to warn consumers as they do in Europe, and to inform them on the ways in which to read the code on the wall of each tire.  This code may appear cryptic at first, but even knowing just where to find the date will provide those with the knowledge of just how much life their tires have left.

There are many discount tire manufacturers these days, so replacing all of the tires on your car will not be as expensive as you may think.  These shops have a wide variety of tires available, from standard all weather tires to ones that are a perfect fit with 20 rims or other specialty wheels.  So, there will be what appears to be a jumble of letters and numbers on the tire wall.

At the end of the list will be numbers that will indicate the month and the year the tire was manufactured.  If that number is 329, this means that it was manufactured in the thirty second week of the year 1999.  The tire is ten years old and should be replaced.  This six year limit on the age of tires even goes for tires that have never been used.  When it comes to tires for your vehicle, it always better to be safe than sorry.

Good tips before buying a Wind Turbine

Posted on September 28th, 2009 by Sandy in Technology

First, work on getting your home’s energy usage low before considering purchasing a wind turbine for wind power. Once this is done, consider how much wind is necessary for a wind turbine to work effectively. You’ll need to know your wind speed around your home. A wind turbine needs consistent wind and most systems require speeds that are up to 7 to 10 miles per hour before they even start producing power. They perform the best at 12 to 20 miles per hour and as the wind speed increases, then the power output increases exponentially.

Make sure your building codes, local zoning and home-owner’s association covenants have no restrictions to height. If so, you might be able to obtain a variance, but just know that this will take time and will be costly.  Plus, even though wind turbines don’t require much space, approximately a half an acre, you might run into conflicts with your neighbors. So, even before purchasing a wind turbine, talk with all your neighbors, let them know your plans and give them room to ask questions. Let them know that your wind turbine will make less noise than an air-conditioner or a washing machine.

Consider the right size wind turbine for your residential property. A typical 10 kilowatt turbine will have a 20 to 25 foot blade diameter, but there are smaller systems with smaller blades available. The height can range for 40 feet to 100 feet. The bottom of the turbine’s blades should be 10 feet or more above the tops of trees and buildings within 300 feet of the turbine to avoid turbulence.  The towers themselves are usually made from steel and are self-supporting and are heftier and costlier. Some are guyed and have guy wires anchored at a distance from the tower’s base, these require more space.

Lastly, the wind turbines installed in residential areas are still grid-connected, so when the wind isn’t blowing, you’ll still be able to get power from your utility grid. If you want to go off-the-grid, you’ll need banks of batteries for storage of electricity when the wind dies down. Even though wind turbines have a lot of upfront costs, they will reduce your electricity costs and serve as a hedge against rising energy costs in the future.

Yoga as Addiction Treatment

Posted on September 24th, 2009 by Sandy in Addiction, Rehab

When we think of addiction treatment or drug rehab, it is not usually a pleasant thought.  Days of detox, going to individual or group therapy, completely reshaping your life—while these are all necessary steps on the road to overcoming an addiction, perhaps there is another more relaxing approach. Yoga.

The most basic principles of yoga combine mental as well as physical healing.  It involves deep inward reflection, meditation, and prayer.  Through  yoga therapy the addict is challenged to look inside themselves and discover the root of the problem, which is sometimes tied to physical or emotional pain.  Meditation is also a time to develop creative solutions for avoiding the addiction and its triggers in the future.  The physical side of yoga not only challenges the body and helps improve physical wellness but also has many poses that can improve mental wellness.  For example the Shavasana pose helps with relaxation and reducing restlessness and over activity while Kriyas helps fight insomnia – a condition many addicts are forced to live with while recovering.

An important thing to remember before trying any alternative medical treatments is to consult with your doctor first and, if possible, get a recommendation for a good yoga therapist.  While Yoga therapy is becoming more accepted (it is now offered in many hospitals), it is best to exercise caution when choosing a therapist on your own.  Many Yoga therapist are also physical therapist, nurses, or are Certified Yoga Therapists; however, some claim to be certified but aren’t, so always ask to view the credentials of whomever you would be working with.  It is also important to consult with a therapist in case dual diagnosis treatment is required.

With the many advances being made in the addiction recovery field, there is something out there for everyone.  If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction find the recovery method that works best for them, whether it is traditional methods or something new and innovative, and get help now.

Mama Mia! New York

Posted on September 14th, 2009 by Sandy in Travel

Mama Mia! is a popular and greatly successful Broadway musical that originally opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in October of 2001. Many of the guests staying in one of the top New York City hotels are in town for the specific reason of seeing this or one of the other popular Broadway offerings. And this has been one of the country’s long standing traditions. The musical provided an early example of the juke box musical genre. This is relatively new development in musical theatre, and audiences were generally not accustomed to it. Its success paved the way for future projects of this genre, and it definitely contributed to and is primarily responsible for the popularity of them. The book for the musical was written by Catherine Johnson, a British playwright. The musical is based on the songs of the iconic Swedish band ABBA, which is also the basis of its name.

Many of the group’s songs are incorporated into the musical including The Winner Takes it All, Knowing Me Knowing You, Dancing Queen, Super Trouper and Take a Chance on Me, among others. The stage musical was adapted for the screen and was released as a film in July of 2008. It starred Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Waters and while it was also a success, it did not exceed the popularity and earnings of its Broadway counterpart.
ABBA is one of, if not the, biggest bands to storm the world that originated in Sweden. They formed in 1970 and were composed of a group of four. Between 1972 and 1982 the managed to top music charts around the world. In addition to being major talents, they were also innovative musicians. They would dub the female voices and loop them back into the music to create additional layers of harmonies. They were also the first European mainland pop group to achieve chart topping success in English speaking countries.

KL has its share of contemporary painters, and you can see interesting new work at galleries duch as Valentine Wille Fine Art.  Started in 1996 by a lawyer, an art collector and a specialist in Asian art, all with exquisite taste, this is a very savvy gallery which shows very smart and beautiful work.  There is always a unique exhibition going on here, with constantly-revolving displays, and you can see some of the most polished cutting edge work in the country.  The VWFA has locations here and in Singapore, and there is a distinctly international sensibility here.  It’s quite welcome, displaying art that is challenging and often able to lift you out of your daily routine and into the sublime.

Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, and seeks to find musicians at the top of their game, and offer events that challenge their technical and creative chops.

Whatismusic also sponsors straight-up concerts featuring new and innovative talents, to contribute to the world music scene, and also to highlight the experimentation going on locally. They also put on shows that have unique twists, such as an acoustic-only festival.  In 2009, they are putting together a show where 50 bands will play for 50 minutes, all in a single room. This kind of boldness and audacity is what makes Whatismusic so interesting, and so vital to the artistic health of the community.  If you happen to be in Melbourne in December, this event promises to be an exciting logistical mess, and it just might suggest pathways for the future of music.
