Canberra, Australia–A City for Kids of Every Age

Posted on July 15th, 2009 by Peter in

Canberra is a city that has a rich farming and indigenous history.  This history began long before the historical naming of the city by the politicians in the beginning of the 1900′s, as the capital of the country of Australia.  New governments took over the oldest of buildings, in thus began the mix of traditional and modern that so encapsulates the city today.  Those early members of the government set out to plan the city.  Literally, geographically.  And intentionally designed a city within a park.  This gives one the feeling of the wilderness of Australia, while enjoying the modern conveniences and amenities of city life, such as many a Canberra, Australia hotel , restaurant, cafe…all charming, all different.  Be it an historical venue, or one that is hip and funky, the artistic city has it all.  From the booming wineries, which by the way had an awesome harvest despite a harsh growing season and are now in the middle of a series of annual festivals , to the Museums that offer a look at the history, and the art and the culture of the region to the various activities that are fun for the whole family and entirely entertaining for children on holiday.

In the National Gallery of Australia for instance, there is an entire wing dedicated just for kids.  Here kids will find exhibitions that are hands-on and interactive.  How many galleries today are ‘hands-on’?  At the Zoo and Aquarium, tours are designed as well–especially for the kids, where they can get up close to cheetahs, monkeys, tigers, and even sharks and bears.  They can press their own coins at the Royal Australian Mint, or take a tour with a famous athlete and participate in virtual gymnastics, rowing and wheel chair basketball games.  The Center of Science and Technology is also fun, for kids of all ages.  Here one can experience what it feels like to be in an earthquake, or visit the wind turbine and tunnel exhibit, or even hold onto one of the famous, very large stick bugs that are indigenous throughout the country.  In all, for the adults and the children, this incredible town, this capital city of Australia provides fun and adventure for the entire family.
