World Cup Dubai
The Dubai World Cup . Once again, Dubai’s glittering social event of the year has graced its shores. Apparently, the theme this year has been deemed, only by my friends and I of course, as being the English garden party inspired. My friends, using this vision as a tool played the part perfectly, hosting a pre-race party in our spacious room at the 5 Star Hotel in Dubai . Champagne flowed, flowers abounded, candles floating in water bowls and lots of pink and white lanterns hung round the room and outside balcony. The only thing I contributed was home made smoked salmon blinis , which were eagerly pounced upon by the well perfumed and English garden attired guests.
After our wonderful pre-race party wrapped up and we all caught a taxi the hotel provide, we all stepped out of the taxis and in front of the venue. My somewhat inebriated friends decided to take a short cut downhill, off road, into terrain of what had the feeling of quicksand which proceeded to eat up our white sandaled shoes as easy prey. We were all laughing and acting like we were sinking, holding our hands up in the air reaching for an imaginary rope. Almost seemed like we were doing a performance art piece. Luckily, we all made it through to the safety of bitumen. We quickly brushed off our precious white footwear against the green turf and we were off and racing once again, clicking our heels through the not so festive metal detectors and baggage scanners.
After establishing were we would all meet in case we get separated, we ascertained the closest bar and were pleasantly surprised it was stocked with Pimms . Then we proceeded to scan the immaculately dressed punters and notice one major difference, compared to the races I have gone to back home, there was a definite absence of actually being able to see the horses race in front of the masses. This would have required us to enter into a ‘dry’ area, no booze. So, needless to say really, on our first World Cup experience we saw no horses that day.
