The Beauty in the Trash

The items that are found in the trash bins of the apartment buildings and NY hotels , even on the city streets of Manhattan, are inspiring children at the Beginnings Nursery School to create.  Old records, x-rays, caps of bottles and corks of wine bottles are being collected for use in the art class.  The young children are being taught at this age, that recycling is important through art lessons and projects in their classroom.  Originally, the center started by dismantling other art projects and reusing the materials, but over the years the system of collection, and sanitation and categorizing of the object found in the city streets, has provided this school with a large collection of future material.  Robin Koo is a teacher at the school, and states that their art supply has no other comparison.

The school was founded with the idea that the children could be encouraged to explore their environments looking for the things that they could use to make boats, sculptures, even miniature carousels.  On any given day, the kids may be seen in the parks of Manhattan , trying out their toys and creations.  And while other schools are limiting their resources due to financial restrictions, the teachers at Beginnings have no limit on the supplies they can take into their own classrooms.  They have so much and receive so many donations from the public, that many times they must turn items away, or re-distribute them to other schools that are starting to take up this idea.  The parents of the children state that they have noticed a difference in the way their children are viewing the environment and the possible reuse of many items for sake of art.  This is one of the many new concepts being applied in the school systems of the city of New York , in an attempt to bring the young around to a more conscious view of their city and its environment.
