Sleep Walking in Shanghai
It was my second day in Shanghai on a business trip when I noticed a few people, seemed around their 20′s, walking around in PJ’s . They walked around in the middle of the city, in their PJ’s as if this is perfectly common. Fortunately, I was to meet up with a Professor friend of mine who studies sociological and psychological aspects of the Shanghai people. We were to meet later on today in the lobby of one of the 5 Star Hotels Shanghai has and then head out for a business lunch.
At lunch, which was going well, I asked him about this phenomena for Shanghain’s to walk around in their PJ’s. He found my question timely, for he was actually doing a study of that very phenomena. From what he can ascertain, back in history, Shanghai people did not wear any vestiges of long-johns, nor did the men were a night-shirt and the women didn’t wear a shift. He was stumped as to this new fashion and why it is becoming more popular. He mentioned also that he has a friend who’s a psychologist with a well-known reputation for interpreting dreams and other night-time events dealing with sleep and he too was stumped, but that now he’s spending sleepless nights to study the motivation behind the phenomena.
When we finished lunch and bid farewell to my business associate, I went to a local kiosk and looked through the latest fashion magazines. Apparently, the newest and latest PJ fashion comes complete with a cell phone pocket. The fashion magazines are describing this latest PJ wearing trend as an ‘in your face’ attitude being developed with the younger generation. They say the younger people are going for comfort and convenience and that they’ll wear PJ’s to accomplish both desires. Ah, that explains everything for me. My parents grew up in the sixties . Need I say more?
