Eating Goa

Posted on June 11th, 2009 by Peter in

I found a handful of fantastic restaurants not too far from the Goa India Hotel I was staying at and I would like to share with you my experience of dinning at each one. My first stop was to have dinner at ‘After Eight’. I heard it was difficult to find, but worth the visit. I found it located between Calangute road and Candolim not too far from the Sarkar Ice Factory. This exquisite restaurant is set outdoors, so wear appropriate clothes that will allow for comfort in the heat of the evening air. You can watch your meal being cooked int he glass-fronted kitchen. Even though I didn’t have reservations, I found the service to be outstanding.

My second restaurant, my friend recommended the Banyan Tree because I love Thai food. Yes, even in India, I still crave Thai food. Apparently, this restaurant imports a different Thai chef from Thailand to spruce up the menu and add a personal touch. It’s located at the Taj Holiday Village in the Bardez district. This Asian Classic eatery is proud of its herb garden, where essential Thai ingredients like lemongrass, ginger and chilies are grown. The seafood creations are a must. I recommend trying thai curry-infused crabmeat and deliciously spiced lobster. This time I remembered to make the required reservations.

While I was eating at the Banyan Tree, the patrons eating at the table next to me told me that before I leave Goa, I must go have dinner at Britto’s located along on Calangute Beach . They couldn’t rave enough about this Goan beach shack. They said it one terrific eatery. So, not wanting to miss out on a local favorite, I made reservations for dinner my last night in Goa. When I arrived, I found I could either sit in the beach shack or in the restaurant section. The restaurant is named after it’s talented chef, Cajie Britto who serves up an amazing pork vindaloo and an excellent prawn curry. I found Kingfisher beer goes along with this dish quite nicely. I am forever grateful that those patrons I met the other night recommend this little delightfully scrumptious eatery.
